Laptop in Critical Condition

It was a hot and sunny day... so my kids wanted to play out in the yard with their "Slip & Slide."(1) Fine with me. I stuck a folding chair in the shade for myself, and as I was on a roll writing a fic, I decided to take my laptop outside with me. (A very wonderful Christmas present from my dh!)
I was a safe distance from the water--I thought. Eight year-old daughter jumped on the water-filled tube causing the water to spray out harder than normal. A few drops landed on the back of the laptop. I told her it got the computer wet and gave her the "don't do that again" speech. You guessed it. She immediately did it again, HARDER, and the keyboard of my laptop was drenched.
I immediately dried it, and there seemed no harm done. But since then... First it wouldn't boot up if running on batteries. Then about a dozen keys (including most of the numerals) stopped working. Now I can't use anything but the touchpad.
Grr...if she had an allowence, it would be forfeit for years. I might have to give her one just to take it away.
Yes, obviously I have access to another computer, or I couldn't be writing this, but ALL of my fanfiction is stored on the laptop. I tried to make a back-up copy today of the newest stuff (whatever wasn't already backed-up), but with a mouse and approx. 3 working keys, it was hopeless.
(1) A "Slip & Slide" is a long piece of plastic you lay on the grass. A hose attaches to one end and the water sprays out from several tiny holes in a water-filled tube to keep the plastic wet and slippery. After a running start, a child bellyflops onto the plastic and slides to the end.
Yes, these are my kids in the photo (a few years ago). I thought I should remind myself how cute they can be when they aren't being destructive.

Date: 2005-07-30 06:49 pm (UTC)Like I said, mine was destroyed, but eventually I got it dry enough to extract some files. It could probably still be repaired, but it would cost almost as much as a new laptop.
Eep. Good luck with yours. *hug*

Date: 2005-12-07 03:37 pm (UTC)I'm happy to saw that my laptop DID survive the entire ordeal. The keys returned to life in the reverse order that they died.
