So, being the sheep that I am (Baa!), I decided to copy [livejournal.com profile] gehayi and take this quiz. I'd taken it once before, but this time the results were surprising. Check out the test results, specifically what it says about New Jersey.

What American accent do you have?

Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.

And if you're not from the West, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Pittsburgher - the quiz can't tell the difference;
(b) Someone from Canada (probably southern Ontario) who doesn't have a Canadian accent;
(c) Someone from northern New England who doesn't have a New England accent; or
(d) Someone from Texas or the Heartland who was born after 1980.
You are definitely not from New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, the Deep South, etc.</font>

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

"Definitely not from New Jersey," it says in D. Huh. I was born in New Jersey and have lived here for virtually my entire life.

C might hold the answer. It says that I could be, "Someone from northern New England who doesn't have a New England accent." My parents are from Vermont, I've spent a lot of time there, and at various points in my life I've been told that I have a "Vermont accent." Of course, when I'm in Vermont, I've been told that I have a New Jersey accent, so go figure.

I wonder what sort of accent the other sheep think I have? Baa!

Eastern New England. Whether or not you pronounce r's, you have the sound of Boston, New Hampshire, and Maine about you. You do think "don" sounds like "dawn" even though the people down in New York City don't.

If you are not from this region, you probably were thinking too hard about one of the questions.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!

Um, yeah, I've lived here all my life too LMAO. When I'm exasperated and talking really fast I occasionally get the New Jersey accent though.

Yep, "don" sounds like "dawn" for me too.

My daughter doesn't pronounce her r's, but in her case, it's a speech impediment, not a Boston-ism. My hubby and I say that if speech class doesn't help her, she'll just have to move to Boston someday.

Heh -- actually, it sounds different for me. Don like "dohn" and "dawn" with the W.

Heeehee.

Funniest thing is I have a friend who grew up just two towns over and she has the thickest Jersey accent I've ever heard. But nope, no one in my family does.

A "Jersey accent" ala the Sopranos? I don't know anyone with one of those, and, as I said before, I've lived in NJ my entire life. (And yes, we really did have mobsters living in my hometowm.)

Maybe -- I've never actually watched the Sopranos despite it being filmed around my town (Holstens -- where the finale scene was shot, is right down the street from where my grandmother lived, and I know they filmed at the local highshcool). But yeah, her accent is definitely recognizable. "Tawk" not "Talk", etc.

Heh, yeah, we might have... a few ;) Let's just say there were some recognizable family names at my highschool...
