I was in my children's school yesterday and spared a glance for the kindergarten bulletin board--lovely pictures of "Our Trip to the Pumpkin Farm." One of the picutes bore the signature "Remus."

Either someone's mom and dad are big fans of the "Uncle Remus" stories, or--far more likely--are big fans of our favorite werewolf.

Remus! That's so cute!

Cute !
It's a pity HP became so famous in a certain way, because I love original names and I always thought that Sirius was a really beautiful and stylish one (I mean, I fell in love with the character in book one only because of his name ! Well, ok, maybe a little bit because he had a flying motorbike too. I'm such a girl).
But anyway, now it's too famous, and I wouldn't dare to name a child Sirius (poor baby would be teased too much. And I would feel cruel giving a name associated in my mind to the character's tragic fate, too ^^;)

That's the risk with choosing a name so strongly associated with just one person (real or fictional). Names associated with many people--or with no one--escape the stigma of association.

One of my daughters has a very common name, and the other has very rare one. I went both ways. LOL

Didn't the French government pass a law limiting baby names to saints' names or names associated with French history? I remember reading about the uproar over that law.

> Exactly. I wouldn't want a name too linked to a particular person.

> Lol. A few people in my family (including my little brother) have original names, maybe that's why I like them. Also, I'm tired that a lot of my male friends are named Julien. I know 11 Juliens ! In France should you scream "Julien" in a street, you can be sure to have a several people answering you. ^^; (I guess it's like John or Jack in English)

> Well, not that I heard of, and I'm pretty sure that if this law was discussed, it never passed. But that's true that we are not allowed to give children completely invented names, like video games characters names or such. But even that, I believe it depends of the case.

I love Sirius as a name on paper, but be an R/S shipper long enough and you'll get SO sick of the "Are you serious?" "Why, yes! I am!" pun that you'd never, ever consider naming a child that. :P (However, if we get a black dog, his name WILL be Padfoot.)

I actually vowed that we wouldn't use a HP name, and I literally SCREAMED when I hit the part where Snape's father is named Tobias, because that was the name we picked out for a boy. Fortunately, Tobias Snape is (at this point) a very minor character, so no one but the most ardent fan would catch the similarity, and even West Wing fans (where we DID steal the name from) don't frequently pick up on the Toby connection, so it's no big deal. But I was so mock-furious at JKR for that!

> Well, I've been an R/S shipper for a long time now, but the thing is, I'm French, so the pun wouldn't be a problem for my child ^^ In fact, in French there isn't any obvious pun with this name, so if it wasn't the name of a famous character in a VERY famous book, I'd really consider it. (but I'll wait till I'm finished with school before thinking of children, lol)

Awww, this is so cute. I always liked the name Remus, simply because I like many names with the suffix -us, e.g. Darius, Marcus, Marius etc.
If I ever felt crazy enough for becoming a mother, I'd have no problems naming the child Sirius or Remus. =) Mothers have the right to be evil.

Hee!

I don't have kids... Or plan on having any... So I did the next best thing: I named my cat 'Remus'. XD

I got my cat pre-HP, so I named her for a different fandom. I figured with the pointy ears, cats look kind of Vulcan, but I didn't want to be an obvious Trekkie, so--I named her after Spock's mother.

RIP, Amanda.
