I've been working (off and on) on a kinda long Remus/Sirius story. It's a slightly AU version of their 6th year at Hogwarts. Things were buzzing along fine until the stupid moon tripped me up.

When I started writing notes for this one, one of the first things I did was look up the dates of the full moons for the years I was using. I dutifully referred to it (and deferred to it) even when the dates fell at inconvenient times for the events I wanted in the stories. (I felt a bit like Remus, shaping my schedule around the moon since she wouldn't reschedule for me.)

Then the stupid thing bollocksed up the whole story. The full moons kept falling at inconvenient points in the months, PLUS two key events each needed to coincide with consecutive full moons. OK--BUT it forced everything that needed to follow the second one into too tight a time frame at the end of the school year; meanwhile, the entire month between them was wasted time.

I put it aside, wrote some short stuff, and just recently picked it up again. Yay! I found a way to rewrite it without a wasted month!

Stupid moon.

Now I understand why JKR didn't even bother trying to get the full moon dates right in PoA.

I've always wanted to write something about Halloween their 4th year because it was a full moon (and maybe a little bit because it was the day I was born)

But I'm always amused by the levels of geekishness that HP fan fic has brought out in all of us. Who would have thought this many fangirls would ever need to look up Lunar calaedars from decades past ;)
