Daughter is sick again--not badly enough to go back in the hospital, but enough that she has a fever and is back on antibiotics--and has been particularly pitiful. After spending most of today in my bed (TV!), she was reluctant to go back in her own room at bedtime.

"But I need to snuggle with my Mommy; I need to feel my mother's love."

Now this out of a thirteen-year-old's mouth cannot be taken seriously. So my reply was made in the same spirit.

"I'll let you take one of my stuffed animals to bed. You can feel your mother's love that way."

She pointed out--quite correctly--that my stuffed animals had been given to me by her siblings (Christmas presents given in the spirit of "If I like it, Mommy will like it") and so would remind her more of them than of me. So, I offered MY childhood teddy bear. Teddy usually lives in my closet as he's old and delicate from being well-loved. Her response?

"He's evil! He has red eyes."--(They're actually orange.)--"And his fur isn't soft anymore."

Poor Teddy.
