A breastfeeding mom was recently made to feel unwelcome at a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Florida. The manager came over and offered her a kitchen towel "to cover up"--even though she was already thoroughly covered by her clothes and her child. She, upset about it, told some friends. The friends then organized a breastfeeding "sit-in" at the same fast food restaurant.

My favorite part of the story: Throughout being interviewed in this news video clip, the mom feeds her baby! You go, girl!

PS-- Florida state law was on the mom's (and the baby's) side.

In Newsweek this week:

Gibson's New Gospel
Ever since Mel Gibson's wife, Robyn, filed for divorce (after 28 years) there has been the usual, unsubstantiated speculation about another woman. We, however, would like to mention another man, a guy named Malachi. As in Malachi 2:15-17, the verses in the Bible that say: "'For I hate divorce!' says the Lord, the God of Israel. 'To divorce your wife is overwhelm her with cruelty,' says the Lord of Heaven's Armies. 'So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife'." Good thing Gibson doesn't take the Bible literally or anything.

LOL! Love it when holier-than-thous get shown up as hypocrites. I had the same thought when I first heard the celebrity gossip--excuse me, news--about Gibson, but I didn't expect to see a national magazine calling him on it.

My previous post mentions the anti-gay ad "Gathering Storm." I saw it once on TV and was equal parts horrified by the message and amused by the unintentional irony. (A rainbow coalition of bigots? WTF?) After reading in the NY Times article about it being on YouTube (but not as popular as its parodies), I decided to check it out on YouTube.

Once I found it, the "Flag as Inappropriate" button called out to me. I clicked on the button and gave as my reason "Contains hateful language"--or something to that effect. Feel free to do the same. Gathering Storm on YouTube

I usually just link to something this, but I always hate when the article vanishes and link becomes a link to nowhere. So...I copied!

The Bigots’ Last Hurrah
By FRANK RICH
Published: April 18, 2009

WHAT would happen if you crossed that creepy 1960s horror classic “The Village of the Damned” with the Broadway staple “A Chorus Line”? You don’t need to use your imagination. It’s there waiting for you on YouTube under the title “Gathering Storm”: a 60-second ad presenting homosexuality as a national threat second only to terrorism.

As seen elsewhere on my flist:

In response to heat they're getting from the American Family Association, P&G is conducting a phone poll to see if people are for or against the Luke/Noah storyline on As The World Turns. Even if you don't watch the show, please consider taking a quick moment to support boy kissing and thwart homophobic bigotry. The poll is completely automated. You don't have to talk to anyone. And it really does take all of a second to register your opinion.

Just call 1-800-331-3774 and press 1 or 2 in response to the questions asked.

Please spread the word if you're so inclined.

Take a minute, folks? The AFA is pressuring P&G pretty heavily, and they need some evidence that not everyone's flipping out about gay boys kissing.

And I used to like Bill Maher.

Maher was a guest on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show the other night. It all started out well. Maher was doing what he does best, insulting politicians. He had one bit about "All Democrats are..." (I don't remember what he said, but I know I laughed) followed by "All Republicans are homosexuals," which confused everyone until he clarified, "But not your garden variety homosexuals. No, the Republican party has your Larry Craig, sex-in-public-bathrooms-homosexuals, your Mark Foley, harassing-Congressional-pages-homosexuals..." etc.

It was funny. (For those of you not in USA, the Republican Party is the party which opposes same-sex marriage and hold themselves to be "holier-than-thou," so Maher's pointing out the hypocrisy of the myriad of recent scandals worked.)

Then things went downhill. )

My local newspaper recently printed an editorial column by Miami Herald columnist Leondard Pitts, Jr. It's his very well stated rebuttal to the recent anti-"gays in the military" statements made by Peter Pace, the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. Gen. Pace said that he's against allowing gays to openly serve in the military because "homosexual acts are immoral" and he doesn't want to "condone immoral acts."

An excerpt of Mr. Pitt's reply:
People like the general--in other words, bigots--often wrap their objections up in claims of fundamental right and wrong where sexual orientation is concerned: I have a moral objection to homosexuality, they will say loftily.

I've always thought
visceral would be better and truer adjective. As in a gut-level objection to people of the same sex engaging in physical or emotional intimacy.

If those who feel that objection would admit to being driven by instinct and not principle, I could at least respect their honesty.

You can read the full column here at the Miami Herald. It made my day.

You gotta see George Takei's faux-Public Service Announcement that aired on the Jimmy Kimmel show. It's his response to the recent anti-gay comments made by a former pro basketball player.

"...your smooth chocolaty head glazed in man-sweat.." [snorfle]

Newsweek has an article on Johnny Depp and Pirates 2 this week--yes, proof yet again that perhaps Newsweek might be better named Entertainmentweek, but I'll let that slide for the moment--and one paragraph begins:

"Depp arrived in Hollywood in the early 80's. Despite a physical beauty that had studio executives slobbering to make him into a Romantic Leading Man and hordes of teenage girls (and a few boys) dreaming of touching his hair just once..."

"...and a few boys..."

Yes, it's true, but how many magazines would say it? And, don't forget, when Troy came out, Newsweek pointed out that Achilles's true love interest was Patroclus, not the slave girl chick.

Kisses to Newsweek!

My local newspaper carries the syndicated advice column "Ask Amy." I always liked it; Amy Dickinson gives good no-nonsense advice and doesn't pull her punches. And with today's column, in which she tells a homophobic busybody, "They're right; you're wrong," she wins my undying love.

I reprint here and hope she doesn't mind! On neighborliness )

Yes! You tell her, Amy!

This guy named Jordan Lorence, an attorney for an organization that opposes same-sex marriage wrote a commentary titled "Flawed reasoning on same-sex unions. I won't post it here but you might find it on the internet if you google him. Anyway, when I read it in my local newspaper, it pissed me off enough that I wrote a letter to the editor--my first ever.

My problem, it's too long. The paper only accept 200 words or less. I've edited it down to 274, but I'm having trouble cutting more. Help?
