Thank goodness for the Duggars
Apr. 10th, 2011 08:19 pmI was at a party the other day, and I ended up sitting at a table with the host's next door neighbor and host's father (among others). Neighbor was talking about the idiocy of a certain law (and how it effects her profession), and it was clear to me that her politics likely leaned liberal.
Father picked up on the "idiocy of the federal government" theme and started complaining about how the US government wasn't doing enough to "secure our borders" and "keep out" and "throw out" illegal aliens.
Neighbor obviously disagreed (judging by the thinning of her lips in disapproval), but didn't want to openly disagree with the senior citizen Father. Someone said something how caucausians will be a minority in the USA within 40 years, and another said that she hadn't helped do her part by only having two children.
I said, "Well, the Duggars are doing their part," and hoped that mention of that supersize family would steer the conversation away from the highly divisive subject of US immigration laws.
It worked. For the next several minutes, everyone at our table discussed the Duggars in a light-hearted way-- how many grandchildren are Jim Bob and Michelle likely to have, how will they remember all their names, etc.-- and by the time that topic petered out, no one felt inclined to resurrect immigration law. Phew!
