Mmm...mud

I went to the home of a close relative for Easter dinner. Relative is an excellent cook and always makes the yummiest things--today we had lasagna. Very yum.

But occasionally, his food hygiene isn't quite up to par. Today, I watched him making the salad. He got the romaine lettuce from the fridge, chopped it up, and tossed it in the bowl. Now, this wasn't the pre-washed, pre-chopped stuff--no, it was straight from the garden to the store to our salad bowl--without a single bath along the way.

While he went off to get other items for the salad, I started to pick through the lettuce. Sure enough, I find several pieces that still have dirt on them. Yuck. I pointed this out to him. Did he then realize the mistake he'd made and wash the lettuce? No. He simply wiped the dirt off those pieces and threw them back in the salad bowl. Any pieces I didn't find...well, dirt's good for you, isn't it?

I just read an AU fanfic in which one of the central characters has a noble title, European variety. He doesn't have one in canon, only in this fanfic. (And no, I won't tell you which fandom because it might be too obvious which "author" I'm criticizing.)

Now, in this AU world, same-sex marriage is legal--seemingly everywhere, so when titled character marrys non-titled character, non-titled character gains a title. Quite plausible; so far, so good. However, previously-non-titled character's relatives also gain titles due to the marriage. Um, no. Wouldn't happen--not in this world at least. She doesn't even use the titles correctly: "Lady" + "Miss" in front of a name instead of one or the other.

Of course, this is an AU world, one in which mpreg is possible--should have been my first clue that fic would find ways to irritate me--so I guess anything is possible. However, since the author took pains to make this sound like our world (except for the whole mpreg and easy acceptance of same-sex marriage thing) shouldn't the author at least make an effort to follow the rules regarding titles used in our world?

1. I was born with clubbed feet. One was just a bit turned, and the other was quite severely turned--so much so that I wouldn't be able to walk today if they hadn't corrected it.

2. I was a cheerleader in high school--for only one year. I made the squad as a sophomore (that's age 15-ish for the non-Americans), but became disenchanted when I realized what pot-heads the rest of the squad was. I decided not to rejoin the following year.

3. My first fanfic fandom was Aquaman, which is quite surprising as (A) he's rather rubbish as far as superheros go, and (B) I'm not really into comic books.

OK, friends. Which is the lie?
