A book recommendation--Druids
Jan. 28th, 2006 09:58 amNot too long ago,
underlucius asked for sci fi and/or fantasy recommendations. I’m a bit too tardy to reply to her post and hope that anyone else will see it—and she received an overwhelming response anyway—but one book has been insisting that I mention it. This one is more historical fiction than anything else, but it does have fantasy elements. It was a great "beside the pool" book for me last summer.
The central character/narrator of Morgan Llywelyn’s Druids is Ainvar, a young druid of the Carnute tribe of Celts in central Gaul. He recognizes Vercingetorix—a historical figure—of the Arvernian tribe as his "soul friend," someone with whom he has been friends in past lives. In this life, they become best friends and fight together to stop Julius Caesar from conquering Gaul. (Unfortunately...you know the story.)
underlucius said that slashability was a plus. While Ainvar and Vercingetorix are never lovers in Druids, they are very, very slashable for fanfic purposes. This sample of the novel is from when the two part after being initiated into manhood together:
