Caffeine of Choice

James and Peter were traditionalists. They liked their caffeine in the form of tea, thank you very much. Although James would occasionally add lemon and honey, Peter firmly preferred milk and sugar.

Sirius's new favourite was coffee. He said that tea was for society matrons, offered primarily so they could show off their family china and monogrammed silver. Coffee was for the young and rebellious, like the disillusioned American expatriates in a Muggle novel he'd read. (Remus suspected that Sirius simply enjoyed ordering it "strong, hot, and Black.")

Remus allowed his friends to argue while he savoured his hot chocolate.

FIC: Pretending to be Human

A plotbunny hopped up to me and asked, "Why is Remus such a chocoholic in fanfiction? He never eats it in canon." I told the bunny that he was absolutely right. Remus merely has chocolate available on occasions when students are likely to encounter Dementors and require its medicinal properties. “Be prepared” is just as apt a motto for DADA professors as it is for Boy Scouts. (Peter, on the other hand— Ron tells us that Scabbers loves Fudge Flies.)

Which is not to imply that I dislike chocoholic-Remus. I love the stuff, so I find it believable that Remus might too. I simply thought it high time to write a story in which he doesn't care for it.

This was the very first fanfic I ever wrote. After reading PoA, I wondered what MWPP had been like as young boys, and tried to write a story in which their characters would be revealed. Of course, OotP blew many of my ideas out of the water.

FIC: Lions and Snakes, Chapter One

"Lions and Snakes" was a story I wrote just before OotP came out (and thus violates OotP canon).

Author’s Note: I tend to think that MWPP were all Gryffindors, but I read a very good story in which Sirius was a Slytherin, Feuds by Morgan D. In that story, James and Sirius had been friends before Hogwarts and continued to be friends even in the face of house pressure. The story only had James and Sirius in it (plus Severus lingering on the sidelines). I started wondering how, in a situation like that, James and Sirius became friends with Remus and Peter.

Author’s Notes: This story was written long before OotP came out and we discovered what Sirius’s parents were really like. These are the parents our poor Padfoot should have had.

When I read PoA, I get the impression that neither Sirius nor Remus ever faced any truly serious consequences from Dumbledore or the Ministry after the Whomping Willow incident (when Sirius told Snape how to get into the tunnel). I wrote my story “A Sirius Mistake” from that viewpoint. However, for those of you who like a bit more angst in their tales…

Author’s Note: Write enough MWPP fanfiction and eventually you’ll probably succumb to writing certain key moments of their lives. I have finally succumbed to writing their first September first, but I’ve tried to make it different. Once JKR introduced us to Sirius’s family in OotP, all my previous conceptions of Sirius and James being friends before Hogwarts or hitting it off immediately flew out the window. This idea took its place. This story is compliant with both OotP canon and with my story “Choosing the Head Boy.”
