Drabble: Caffeine of Choice

Caffeine of Choice

James and Peter were traditionalists. They liked their caffeine in the form of tea, thank you very much. Although James would occasionally add lemon and honey, Peter firmly preferred milk and sugar.

Sirius's new favourite was coffee. He said that tea was for society matrons, offered primarily so they could show off their family china and monogrammed silver. Coffee was for the young and rebellious, like the disillusioned American expatriates in a Muggle novel he'd read. (Remus suspected that Sirius simply enjoyed ordering it "strong, hot, and Black.")

Remus allowed his friends to argue while he savoured his hot chocolate.

*snicker!*

When I was editing this down to the required length, I knew that line had to stay.

I agree, it's a brilliant line. ;) Very nice drabble!

Thanks!

This is lovely! And strong, hot, and Black, indeed! ;)

Isn't he!

Thanks!

Brilliant as always! I'm a tea and hot chocolate girl myself - don't drink coffee at all - but I wouldn't mind something else that's 'strong, hot, and Black' (though, of course, I would never dream of taking him away from Remus). :D It really depends on the tea, though, what you put in it. Black tea requires milk, green tea often needs a bit of sugar, herbal teas are wonderful with honey and sometimes a bit of lemon. ::nods wisely::

I truly enjoyed all of this, but — predictably — the strong, hot, and Black particularly caught my attention ;-) Not just because it's so funny, but also because it's such a Sirius thing to say, and such a Remus thing to notice. It's amazing, really, how you captured some of their characters in this single notion.

Lovely work, thank you for sharing!

Milk in tea? Yuck! Yes, I know that's the way to drink it in England, but--yuck!

In stereotypical American fashion, I prefer my tea iced, and with lots of lemon and sugar. (And isn't iced tea typically made from black tea?)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

Red, green, or black, I believe. I don't usually put much sugar in any tea anymore, it gives me a headache. I do like lemon in iced tea, though.

Red tea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooibos) isn't really tea at all; it's another plant altogether which is prepared and drunk like tea.

And, yes, green tea is the latest fad in both hot and iced tea.

But I'm talking about traditional "Y'all want tea?" iced tea that's served throughout THE SOUTH in the USA. (To whence I shall soon be making my annual pilgrimage. Only black tea will do, and the relatives I'm vacationing with will go through about 3 gallons of the stuff a day.)

"Strong, hot and Black" was an ingenious line! I loved it! Very suitable choice drinks for everyone else too. ^^

I wish I could take credit for it being a completely original line, but I know I've heard variations of it before. I just get credit for knowing that Remus would see right through Sirius's motives in ordering coffee.

Thanks!

Ahh. I've to confess that I haven't read a lot of RS or even HP fics, and it's the first time I've seen the line. Nicely used, nevertheless. :D

And knowing Sirius so well, Remus so would. :D

[identity profile] mysid.livejournal.com 2007-06-15 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Giggle] No, I meant that I've heard variations of it used in real life (and TV shows, movies, etc.). I don't recall reading it in a HP fic, although I probably have.

Ohhh I see. I've heard the phrase used elsewhere in real life too, but applying it to Sirius was what I found clever. :D

I liked the character-defining drinks, it really does seem to fit them all so well: the lemon-honey bittersweet tea for James; the traditional English tea for Peter, the ever sweet and comforting chocolate for Remus, and as you and Remus put so well the strong, hot, and Black. for Sirius. Lovely.

Well, that's it for today, I've read all your drabbles, next I'll move onto the fics>.<. Sorry to clutter up your inbox.

I'm glad you liked my choices for each of the four, and I'll be looking forward to your cluttering up my inbox some more!
