"American Pie" Video
A college friend recently sent me a link to a cool video on YouTube about the "meaning" of the song "American Pie" by Don McLean. (Back when we were in college, we loved to play the song and sing along. And no, it wasn't a new song back then; I'm not that old.)
It's very good. I especially like the portion in which the photos from The Rolling Stones' concert at Altamont are matched with the appropriate lyrics:
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick!
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died.
The Altamont concert is considered the symbolic "end" of the 60's era of "peace and love." An audience member fired a gun at the Hell's Angels acting as security, and then the Hell's Angels beat the man to death. It's widely (but inaccurately) reported that the Stones were playing "Sympathy for the Devil" at the time, and of course, one of the Stones' albums is entitled Jumpin' Jack Flash.
