I need a little help from the Brits

I'm writing a fanfic set in England (of course), and it's time once again to throw myself on the mercy of my British friends and ask a series of "Please help me sound less like a stupid American" questions.

O-levels and A-levels, which one is which?

One of my characters is a solicitor. Would it be appropriate to refer to his business as a "law firm," a "law practice," or ___________ ?

He went to school in the 1940's. Would I say that during this time "he went to law school," "studied for the law,", or is there another phrase that would be better?

Thank you!
