Rabid Homophobia on Display

And I used to like Bill Maher.

Maher was a guest on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show the other night. It all started out well. Maher was doing what he does best, insulting politicians. He had one bit about "All Democrats are..." (I don't remember what he said, but I know I laughed) followed by "All Republicans are homosexuals," which confused everyone until he clarified, "But not your garden variety homosexuals. No, the Republican party has your Larry Craig, sex-in-public-bathrooms-homosexuals, your Mark Foley, harassing-Congressional-pages-homosexuals..." etc.

It was funny. (For those of you not in USA, the Republican Party is the party which opposes same-sex marriage and hold themselves to be "holier-than-thou," so Maher's pointing out the hypocrisy of the myriad of recent scandals worked.)

Things went downhill when the next guests came out. They were the choreographers/stars of a new show called Dance War. In time honored talk show tradition, Maher moved from the prime seat near Leno onto the neighboring couch. Girl-choreographer, Carrie Ann, took the seat nearest Jay, so boy-choreographer, Bruno, got the next best seat between Carrie Ann and Bill Maher--on the couch with Maher, and that's key to what went next.

Bruno told Maher he was a big fan of his, and then tried to focus on schmoosing with Jay Leno and promoting his new show. He didn't seem comfortable with turning his back on Maher--too polite I guess--so he kept turning his head to look back at Maher while carrying on the conversation. He looked back one too many times, and Maher started to freak out.

Maher's "Why do you keep looking at me?" led into a reassuring pat on the arm from Bruno, and a "Ha ha ha, you're just too good looking" type joke (which was clearly a joke since Maher was far from looking jumpable), and it spiraled down from there. Maher started looking like a nervous wreck, began making one homophobic joke after another, and twice begged Leno to "save" him. Bruno played off it a little bit, but for the most part, it was just Maher being an homophobic ass about sitting next to a gay man. It was painful to watch.
